As the regular readers of this blog might have noticed, I’m a free software type of person. On my own laptop I run Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 . I have a Server running Ubuntu Server 7.04 with a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) install and some other security software. I just love the way it works and the ease of configuration. The nice thing about Linux is, you get most applications for free and don’t need to purchase everything to try it. In most cases you just add the software, and if you like it, you use it, if you don’t, you remove it and try another.

This article is not aimed at the Linux user, but the Microsoft Windows user. The reason for this is, most Windows users get a certain basic package that will help them with lots of productivity issues they might have, but essentially Windows comes in a bare state. Most users will want to add some functionality to their Windows boxes and for this I feel there is loads of good, even great free software to use. I’ll give you some examples of web sites you can visit to help you find the software you might be looking for. I will also cover some of the software that I see my clients need from time to time to make their life just that little bit easier.

MS Windows is a system in my opinion that is targeted by viruses, worms, Trojan horses and the likes. Windows does crash, or at least some of the system files get corrupted and you have to reload your system. I have had very good results with very basic solutions that helps postpone the inevitable Windows reload. It’s not rocket science, but very simple basics to follow that makes your reload a whole lot simpler.

My number one would be, when you reload your PC create two different user accounts, one for the administrator, and one for the normal day to day user. The idea behind this is simple, you don’t need admin privileges to work on your PC.

I have a big issue with spam, I hate what it’s doing to the internet.

I discovered a small and very useful application that enables me to download my mail headers, check what’s spam and delete it without downloading it  to my mail client. This handy little application is called Pop Peeper. Pop Peeper allows you to monitor more than one email address, as well as different type of email accounts like eg POP3, IMAPand GMAIL. I trully is a little gem for me seing that I hate spam so much.

Have a look on their website and try it, I’m sure most of you would also like to remove the incomming spam from your inboxes and possibly avoid having yourt email address blacklisted.
